FRESH start

OPEN AND AIRY RENOVATION

LACY HUGHES & BILLIE MARIE THARALDSON OF JULIAN DESIGN

With their third child off to college this year, our clients sought to create an inviting home representing a fresh start. While the house had gorgeous bones, it lacked the details and custom touches that would ultimately define it as their new home and truly make it feel personal and one-of-a-kind. In Minnesota, their home was very traditional. But for this new space, the design brief was simple, "light."

In the kitchen, we reworked the island to add a banquette seating area that creates an open space between the kitchen and main living room.

We added some architectural wainscoting and lighting in the formal dining room to create a grander atmosphere for entertaining.

On the upper level, we expanded into the attic space to create a rec room with all their favorite games and hobbies. We added a wet bar that’s perfect for gathering when all the kids come home to visit.

A small closet off the dining room was converted into an office area by expanding and adding the French doors, allowing the owners to have light even when needing some privacy.
