Redefining Dermatology

The allure of smooth, clear, supple skin is undeniable.Unfortunately, not all of us are blessed with naturally beautiful skin, and as we age, let’s just say it takes a bit of maintenance. Luckily, modern breakthroughs are enabling nearly all of us to enjoy great looking skin in any season of life.

Microneedling has received a makeover. This minimally invasive treatment uses micro-fine needles to puncture the skin, triggering the body’s wound healing process and stimulating collagen and elastin production. The tiny punctures allow products applied topically during the treatment, such as hyaluronic acid, to penetrate more deeply into the skin. With the advent of RF microneedling, radio frequency (RF) energy is delivered deep within the dermis via the microneedles which heat the underlying layers, causing constriction and tightening of the skin, and further stimulating collagen and elastin production. Results are typically more dramatic than traditional microneedling.

Noninvasive laser therapy is a popular acne treatment option that doesn’t involve taking pills or using topical lotions or creams. Now, the addition of light-absorbing gold-coated silica microparticles helps make laser acne treatment even more effective. The gold microparticles, applied topically before laser treatment, allow sebaceous glands to be selectively targeted, facilitating photothermal heating of sebaceous glands. As a result, sebum production is disrupted, and acne breakouts are diminished.

Have you been diagnosed with a non-melanoma skin cancer such as basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma? You may be a good candidate for a nonsurgical, noninvasive treatment called Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT). Low dose SRT delivers a precise, calibrated dose of superficial radiation that destroys basalcell and squamous cell carcinoma, as well as the non-malignant tumor cells that cause keloids—all without incisions. SRT treatment is virtually pain free, and there is no need for anesthesia. Patients typically heal quickly and little to no downtime is required.

New skin care products, such as SkinMedica’s LUMIVIVE System, claim to protect your skin from blue light emitted from electronic devices. “Visible light, including blue light like that emitted by phones and devices, is particularly insidious, because it penetrates deeper than some forms of ultraviolet light, accelerating visible signs of aging,” says San Diego based dermatologist Dr. Sabrina Fabi says. With two distinct formulas—one to shield skin from blue light and environmental aggressors during the day and another to recharge the skin’s essential repair process at night— LUMIVIVE targets the signs of aging for optimal skin health, vitality, and radiance.
